The Luminous Lagoon in Jamaica is one of the most magical and surreal experiences you can have on the island — a place where the water glows an electric blue when disturbed, thanks to a rare natural phenomenon.
Located in Falmouth, Trelawny, the Luminous Lagoon is home to bioluminescent microorganisms called dinoflagellates. When the water is agitated — by your hand, a boat, or while swimming — these microscopic creatures emit a glowing, neon-blue light. It’s one of only four places in the world where this phenomenon occurs, and Jamaica’s lagoon is the brightest and most accessible.
Why It Glows
The glowing effect is caused by dinoflagellates, a type of plankton that reacts to movement.
The lagoon’s shallow, warm brackish water (where saltwater meets freshwater) creates the perfect conditions for them to thrive.
The glow is best seen at night, especially on dark, moonless evenings.
